How to build a raised garden bed
Building a raised garden bed
Nothing tastes better than vegetables you’ve grown yourself! But small animals and pets can make successfully growing your own produce difficult – and that’s what makes raised garden beds so useful. Lifting vegetables up off the ground provides a small measure of protection against pesky critters like rabbits and it makes it easier to weed too!
And it’s not all that hard when you get the right gear from your local Mighty Helpful Mitre 10.
Materials list:
- Greenlife Slimline Garden Bed
- Philips Head Screwdriver
- Gardening Gloves
- Debco Potting Mix
- Plants of Choice
- Watering Can
- Scissors
- P2 Face Mask
- Trowel
Step 1. Find the perfect position
Before you start building your raised garden bed, find the perfect location for it. Look for a spot in your garden with a northeast orientation and that isn’t too shaded by surrounding foliage.
Step 2: Assemble your raised garden bed
Unpack your Greenlife Slimline Garden Bed and confirm that you have all the parts required. Make sure you assemble your raised garden bed on a level surface and wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges.
Start by fastening the corner brackets to the side and end panels using the nuts and bolts provided. Tighten them with your Philips Head Screwdriver.
Step 3: Fill your garden bed with soil
Once you’ve finished assembling the garden bed, move it into your chosen position and begin filling it with a Premium Potting Mix, leaving some space at the top for your plants. When opening your potting mix, it’s a good idea to wear a mask to protect yourself from dust particles.
It’s really worth investing in quality soil at this early stage, as the better your soil, the better your eventual harvest will be.
Step 4: Plant your veggies
Remove your veggies from their temporary soil and plant them in the raised garden bed. Tomatoes, strawberries, leafy greens, squash and herbs are all good plants for beginners. Pat the soil down firmly around each one as you go, and add extra soil to fill in any gaps.
