Easy DIY Wall Panelling
Feature walls can really elevate a space, adding depth and style with just a few well-placed elements. Many people bring feature walls to life with wallpaper and paint, but using timber moulding to create a pattern of your choice is a much more elegant way to make your mark.
And it’s not all that hard when you get the right gear from your local Mighty Helpful Mitre 10.

Step 1: Design and measure
Decide on the design you want to use for your feature wall and then measure out the space. We went for a geometric design with a 300mm gap between each piece of timber moulding. Moulding was placed on 45-degree and 180-degree angles only. This means we can use a standard mitre box to make cuts for our horizontal cross pieces.
Once you’ve decided, measure your space to determine how much timber you’ll need to bring your design to life.
Step 2: Cut your timber and attach to wall
Start with your longest line first. Measure, mark the angle on the wall and cut your timber to size using the mitre box and a saw. Attach the timber moulding to the wall using Selleys Liquid Nails. Secure it while it dries with a handheld stapler and 14mm staples, evenly spaced.
Repeat with remaining pieces of timber.
Step 3: Sand and fill
Check all your staples are flush to the surface of the timber. If any are sticking out, give them a gentle tap with your hammer to ensure a smooth finish when you paint. Fill any remaining gaps between timber pieces with Selleys Rapid Set Filler.
Step 4: Paint your feature wall
Paint your feature wall in the colour of your choice. Depending on the original colour of the wall and the shade you’ve chosen, you may need to do a few coats.
